Rangefinder vs GPS Watch

Standing in the fairway with no idea whether the green is 120 yards away or 160 is one of the genuinely disorienting experiences of early golf. Distance devices solve that, and there are two kinds. They are not competing versions of the same product — they answer different questions.
A laser rangefinder tells you the exact distance to something you can see and aim at. A GPS— watch, handheld or phone app — tells you where you are on a mapped hole, and therefore your distance to the front, middle and back of the green whether or not you can see any of it.
What a laser rangefinder does
You look through it, put the reticle on the flag, and press a button. The device fires an invisible laser, times the reflection, and reports the distance to within about a yard.
Its strength is precision to a specific target.Not just the flag — the front edge of a bunker, the tree you need to carry, the corner of a dogleg. Any object you can see, you can measure.
Its weaknesses are real.You have to be able to see the target, which rules out blind approaches and dogleg tee shots — exactly the holes where you most want a number. You have to hold it steady enough to hit a flagstick a hundred and fifty yards away, which is harder than it sounds in wind or with cold hands. And on a misfire it will happily give you the distance to the trees behind the green, which is why pin-lock confirmation is the feature to look for. It is also the reason a hunting rangefinder behaves badly on a golf course— those are tuned to report the furthest object rather than the nearest.

What a GPS does
A GPS device knows where you are and holds a surveyed map of the hole. It reports your distance to the front, middle and back of the green automatically, updating as you walk. Better units add hazard carries and layup distances.
Its strength is that it requires nothing of you. Glance at your wrist, read the number, choose a club. No aiming, no steadiness, no line of sight. On a blind approach or from deep in the trees, it is the only one of the two that works at all.
It also gives you the number that beginners actually need, which is not the distance to the flag. It is the distance to the middle of the green, and the distance to carry the front edge. Aiming at the middle is the correct strategy for anyone who is not consistently hitting greens, and a GPS hands you that number without being asked.
Its weaknesses:accuracy of a few yards rather than one, no distance to arbitrary targets, it needs charging, and the course has to be mapped — almost all are, but check yours.
The accuracy argument, in perspective
A laser is accurate to about a yard. A GPS is accurate to a few. Rangefinder enthusiasts make a great deal of this, and for a good player it matters.
For a beginner it does not, and it is worth being blunt about why. If your 7-iron travels anywhere between 125 and 155 yards depending on how you strike it, a three-yard measurement error is not what is costing you shots. The device is more precise than your golf swing by an order of magnitude, and precision beyond your ability to use it is a specification you are paying for and not consuming.
This changes when your strike tightens up. At that point one yard starts to be worth something, and a laser earns its place.
What the Rules say
Distance-measuring devices are permitted by default under the Rules of Golf. A committee can prohibit them by local rule for a particular competition, but in ordinary play and most events they are fine.
The restriction that matters is slope. A slope-enabled device adjusts the raw distance for elevation change and tells you the distance to play rather than the distance measured. That is genuinely useful information and it is not permitted in competition. This is precisely why good rangefinders have a slope mode you can switch off, usually with a visible external indicator so a playing partner can see it is disabled.

The pace-of-play question
Both devices should speed you up, and used badly both slow you down.
A GPS is faster in practice: you glance at your wrist while walking to your ball and you already have the number when you arrive. A laser requires stopping, taking it out, finding the flag, and confirming the lock — a process that takes fifteen seconds when it goes well and considerably longer when it does not.
The habit that matters more than the device: get your number while other people are playing, not when it is your turn. The honest answer for a beginner
Start with a free phone app. Genuinely. Golf GPS apps use the same surveyed course maps as dedicated devices and give you front, middle and back distances for nothing. Play a season with one and find out whether you actually use the information. Many beginners discover they do not, because they are not yet choosing clubs by number.

The step up from a phone app is convenience rather than data: your wrist is faster than your pocket and you stop draining your phone battery. Buy a laser when you know your distances.That is the honest trigger. A rangefinder tells you it is 147 yards, and that number is worth nothing unless you know what you carry a 9-iron. What to spend the money on instead
A dedicated distance device costs about the same as a good iron set upgrade or several lessons, and for a first-year golfer both of those return more.
The reason is simple: distance information only helps if your problem is club selection. For most beginners the problem is strike quality — the shot that comes off the toe and travels 90 yards was never going to be solved by knowing the flag was 140 away. None of which is an argument against owning one eventually. Knowing your yardages is genuinely one of the pleasures of improving, and it is the point at which golf starts to feel like a game of decisions rather than a game of hope.
